Why Runners Choose Dr. Petko
My name is Dr. James Petko, a local Sports Medicine Professional. Our practice is dedicated primarily to the diagnosis and treatment of running-related injuries. SportsMedicine has grown tremendously over the past decade, and there are many practitioners available for the treatment of lower-extremity running injuries. However, few of these practitioners are actually dedicated long-distance/marathon runners themselves. Is there a difference between a doctor who runs and a doctor who doesn’t run? You will have to be the judge of that. We believe there is a difference. In fact, we believe that there’s a big difference between the occasional jogger and the serious, dedicated, long-distance runner.

Several years ago, a very reputable medical study was performed on over 10,000 long-distance runners, and it was shown that two-thirds of all running injuries are training related. Knowing whether a particular injury is biomechanically-based, shoe-related and/or training-related is an important aspect of working with long-distance runners. Going to a doctor who looks beyond the obvious pathology is a critical part of SportsMedicine. We believe going to a doctor who does exactly what you do out on the open roads is also extremely important.

With all that being said, what does this all have to do with you? If you run long enough, eventually you will develop injuries, some of which will be minor & some of which will become more chronic. We want to inform you that our practice exists to provide no-nonsense evaluations and treatment exclusively for long-distance runners. It is our expressed goal to get you back on the roads as soon as possible. I spend a lot of time educating patients about their biomechanics as well as their injuries. If you have questions about us or about the services we provide, please do not hesitate to call us.

We are a very runner-friendly office!
